Did you know that Europe, is the biggest tourist market in the world. Half of the European share (25% of whole global market in terms of arrivals and 20% in receipts) has been kept by four countries in the continent - France, Spain, Italy and UK. In 2001 together they welcomed almost 190 million foreign tourists, the same figure as in 2000. 9 out of 15 most frequent tourist destinations in the world are either European Union counties or are states that hope to become EU members by 2004. Western and Southern Europe hold for the most of the successes of the European tourist industry. These two regions represent 30-35% of the global tourism industry both in terms of receipts and international arrivals!

Did you know That UK residents made a record 44.2 million holiday trips abroad in 2005; 43 per cent were package holidays, down from 53 per cent in 2001.

Did you know That the UK received 30 million visitors from overseas in 2005, a new high. The last peak was in 1998 with 25.7 million visitors. (Table 12.21)

Did you know that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) forecasts that international tourism will continue growing at the average annual rate of 4 %.By 2020 Europe will remain the most popular destination, but its share will drop from 60 % in 1995 to 46 %. Long-haul will grow slightly faster than intraregional travel and by 2020 its share will increase from 18 % in 1995 to 24 %.

Did you know the with the advent of e-commerce, tourism products have become one of the most traded items on the internet. Tourism products and services have been made available through intermediaries, although tourism providers (hotels, airlines, etc.) can sell their services directly. This has put pressure on intermediaries from both on-line and traditional shops.

Did you know that there is a strong correlation between Tourism expenditure per capita and the degree to which countries play in the global context. Not only as a result of the important economic contribution of the tourism industry, but also as an indicator of the degree of confidence with which global citizens leverage the resources of the globe for the benefit of their local economies. This is why any projections of growth in tourism may serve as an indication of the relative influence that each country will exercise in the future.

Did You Know that Travel and Tourism is a $1.3 trillion industry in the United States? If one dollar bill equalled a second of time, then $1.3 trillion would equal over 41,000 years.

Did You Know that Travel and Tourism generates $100 billion in tax revenue for local, state, and federal governments in the U.S.? If you place 100 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would circle the world 397 times.

Did You Know that each U.S. household would pay $923 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the Travel and Tourism Industry? $923 will buy two months worth of groceries for a family of four, will fill the average car with gas 35 times or will pay for a family beach vacation.

Did You Know that the Travel and Tourism industry is one of the country's largest employers with 7.3 million direct travel-generated jobs? You could fill the Orange Bowl stadium a hundred times over with people directly employed in the industry.

Did You Know that there is $163 billion direct travel-generated payroll and that one out of every eight U.S. non-farm jobs is directly and indirectly created by travel and tourism.

Did You Know that international travellers spent $93 billion in the U.S. in 2004? That's enough money to buy 470 new Boeing 747 jumbo jets.

Did You Know that shopping is the most popular domestic trip activity, and is included in 30 percent of all domestic trips. In total, that's 342 million trips with shopping sprees.

Did You Know that approximately 2.6 million hotels rooms are sold everyday in the United States. That is enough rooms to lodge every person living in San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Miami, and Denver combined.

Did You Know that 80 percent of adult travellers (over 118 million people) have included an historic or cultural activity while travelling. That is roughly the population of United Kingdom and Italy combined.

Did You Know that spending by resident and international travelers in the U.S. averaged $1.6 billion a day, $68 million an hour, $1.1 million a minute, and $19,000 a second.

Did You Know that the travel and tourism industry is one of America's largest service exports with $93 billion spent by international visitors in the U.S. and $89 billion spent outside the U.S. by domestic travellers creates $4 billion in balance of trade surplus for the U.S.

Did You Know that the just a 1 percent increase in U.S. worldwide market share would equal a 7.6 million increase in visitors, a $12.3 billion increase in expenditures, 151,000 new jobs, a $3.3 billion increase in payroll, and $2.1 billion more in federal, state and local tax revenue?

Sportfishing Tourism

Did You Know that according to "Angling - An Independent Review" by the UK Sports Council the total spend by anglers in the UK in 1991 was calculated at £2.41 billion per annum. According to the NRA's "National Angling Survey 1994 Fisheries Technical Report" concluded that there were 2.9 million freshwater and sea anglers in England & Wales and that their total annual spend was £3.3 billion per annum. In its ‘Charter for Angling’ (1996), the Labour Party estimated that the total annual spend on angling activity by British anglers was £5 billion. In 2008 annual spend by British anglers is estimated at between £7.0 and £7.5 billion per annum.

Did You Know that according to the Environment Agency's "Public Attitudes to Angling - 2001" report there were 3.8 million freshwater anglers in the UK which represented 9% of the adult population (a further 8% were ‘very’ or ‘quite’ interested in angling). The Drew Report into sea angling in (2004) established that around 1.1 million people undertook recreational fishing in the sea. The total number of UK anglers of all types in 2007 is estimated between 5 and 6 million people.

Did You Know that according to the European Anglers’ Alliance (EAA) and the European Fishing Tackle Trade Association (EFTTA) there are 2,900 companies manufacturing or trading fishing tackle within the EU and this activity supports some 60,000 jobs. In addition there are 12,900 fishing tackle shops in the EU employing a further 39,000 people.

Did You Know that according the American Sportfishing Association around 44 million people in the USA go fishing each year which generates $45 billion in retail sales with a further $125 billion impact on the nation’s economy which sustains employment for over one million people.

Did You Know that economic activity associated with angling is of particular benefit to incoming tourism in rural areas. According to a recent report prepared for the National Assembly for Wales, sea angling in Wales alone generates tourism expenditure of £28 million per annum for species that commercially are worth just £3 million!

Did You Know that according UK’s Salmon & Trout Association the average sum spent by an angler to catch a single Scottish salmon is approximately £500, whereas the same salmon is worth just £20 to a commercial fisherman!

Did You Know that freshwater fishing (coarse and game) in Scotland brings £113 million annually to the Scottish economy. In a study of the River Spey in Scotland in 2004 it was discovered that the fishery was worth £11.8 million per annum and supported 367 FTE jobs.

Did You Know that a report commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers looking at the economic value of recreational fisheries in the Nordic countries demonstrated that in 1998 Finland landed a total commercial catch of 48 million kg of fish which was worth FIM 320 million whereas the same catch taken recreationally would have been worth FIM 1,220 million. In Sweden the variance was even greater, with a commercial fish catch of 79 million kg in 1995 being worth SEK 240 million and a smaller recreational catch of 58 million kg in 1999 being worth SEK 2,730 million.

Did you know? In the US over 47.7 million birders on average spent part of 115 days in 2006 pursuing their interest. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2006 survey defines two wildlife-watching categories: around the home and more than a mile from home. Eighty-eight percent of birders (almost 42 million) observe birds around the home, while 42 percent (almost 20 million) take birding trips.

Did you know? Wildlife watching in the US is most popular in the West-North-Central region (the Dakotas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska) and New England. The West-North-Central region also leads in away-from-home watching.
