March 2010
Natural England, Woodwalton Fen, Cambridgeshire, UK - 02nd March 2010

HDC Commissioned to design and fabricate a series of interpretive panels for the entrance to Woodwalton Fen NNR. The project is a joint efforts between Natural Englsnd and the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough Wildlife Trust.

Cheadle Better Welcome, Cheadle, Staffordshire, UK - 31st January 2010

HDC commissioned to plan, research, design and build historic town interpretation trail focusing on the famous Victorian neo-Gothic architect, Augustus Pugin who designed and built 14 buildings in and around the town including St Giles Church - "Pugins Gem".

Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough Wildlife Trust - 21st January 2010

HDC commissioned to deliver interpretive training for the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough Wildlife Trust teams at the Ramsey Heights Countryside Classroom in the heart of the Great Fen

Garden Centre Group, UK - 01st January 2010

Develop brown sign schemes for 41 sites across the UK. Project includes site analysis, application to local authorities and the Highways Agency, design, fabrication and installation.

High Weald AONB, Kent, UK - 04th December 2009

Fabricate HDC Fossil outdoor interpretive panel and pedestal for the recently restored Smokehouse at Highbrook near Ardingly.

September 2009
National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, UK - 02nd September 2009

Contracted to present a workshop on "walks, talks, tours and trails" for museum staff to "help inspire people to develop tours for a forthcoming web site". The workshop looked at new technologies for making tours available to visitors and the possibility of providing the tours in a variety of knowledge or experience levels (mass customization), as well as in a variety of languages.

Snowdonia National Park Training Center, Wales, UK - 01st September 2009

1 - 4th September, 2009. Advanced Interpretation Planning. This advanced interpretation course will look at a variety of subjects including interpretive master planning, marketing for heritage sites, interpretive product development, audience development, new technologies, and visitor surveys and evaluation. We will focus on how to attract more visitors and make more income and more cost effective programs and services.

Naturealm, Summit County Metro-Parks, OH, USA - 21st July 2009

Provide interpretive exhibit planning and design consultation services for Naturealm's new interpretive exhibit project. JV developed the interpretive master plan for Naturealm last year and this is follow up work to provide practical support for the exhibit design project currently under way.

Valley of Aconcagua, Valparieso, Chile - 11th June 2009

HDC commissioned to plan and develop a new driving interpretive trail following the route of Bernardo O'Higgins Liberation Army from the Argentinean/Chilean boarder to the final battle site at Chacabuco a few miles from Santiago. Project involved master planning, panel design and fabrication and the development of a marketing and funding strategy.

May 2009
Luray Valley Museum & Gardens, Luray, VA, USA - 30th May 2009

This new visitor experience will be part of the Luray Caverns complex, which includes the Luray Caves, a vintage car museum, a heritage farm and related historic buildings and gardens. The Luray Valley Museum is a new museum project for the site, and will celebrate the history of the Shenandoah Valley with additional emphasis on the decorative arts and people of the Luray Virginia area as well. Interpretation will also include looking at the formal Gardens with heritage plants and related demonstrations. The project will be completed by the end of April, 2009.

Chile’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Chile - 17th May 2009

Assess 5 UNESCO world heritage sites for inclusion into Nokia / UNESCO / ProXol mobile phone interpretation project

El Rancho Espantapajaro, Puerto Montt, Chile - 16th May 2009

HDC commissioned to plan, design and build a sensory interpretive trail at the Rancho Espantapajaro near Puerto Montt in Northern Patagonia. Key aspects of the trail are the Pumpkin-head Maze and the bare-foot trail. Although popular in Europe, we believe is the first bare-foot sensory trail in Latin America.

The Cardiff Story, Cardiff, Wales, UK - 11th May 2009

Provide a two-day interpretive development workshop for the museum staff. The Cardiff Story is developing a new museum to interpret and celebrate the people and history of this city.

Group for Education in Museums, Bristol, UK - 08th May 2009

JV invited to present a training workshop for GEM entitled Interpretation for the New Millennium - Are You Ready? This workshop focused on a brief review of interpretive basics and a look at new approaches to planning, designing and presenting interpretive programs and services. We included topics such as "mass customization", outcome based planning, and new marketing strategies for changing market groups.

Valley of Aconcagua, Valparieso, Chile - 06th May 2009

HDC commissioned to plan and develop a new driving interpretive Church trail involving 16 historic churches. Project involved master planning, panel design and fabrication and the development of a marketing and funding strategy.

Snowdonia National Park Training Center, Wales, UK - 04th May 2009

4-6 May, 2009. Introduction to Interpretation. This is an "entry level" basic interpretation course for individuals finding themselves working in interpretive sites or positions who have had no formal training in interpretive services.

Cornish Mining UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cornwall, UK - 20th April 2009

HDC commissioned by the Cornish Mining UNESCO World Heritage Site to assist in the development of a £2m funding bid to South West Regional Development Agency. The bid has been successful and a development program will be rolled out over the next few years.

Tamar Valley AONB, Nr Tavistock, Devon, UK - 01st April 2009

HDC commissioned to undertake major interpretive review of Tavistock & the Tamar Valley World Heritage Site area. Undertake interpretive audit of 18 attractions & sites, a feasibility study in to the development of a new visitor centre in Tavistock, develop interpretive master plan for the new visitor centre & 4 walking trails in & around Tavistock, & undertake coach market research & staying & day visitor research.

March 2009
Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, VA, USA - 10th March 2009

Provided an interpretive training workshop for foundation members. The National Historic District, one of the nation’s congressionally-designated National Heritage Areas, encompasses ten battlefields and more than 325 military engagements as well as numerous related historic sites. As approved by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation is responsible for leading the preservation effort for these sites.

Deliver introduction to interpretation training course for the Suomenlinna Fortress & Kvarken Archipelago UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

National Wool Museum, Wales, UK - 12th February 2009

Undertake critical interpretive assessment and asset audit of the National Wool Museum and make development recommendations at part of an ongoing contract with the National Museum of Wales. Invited to return to the Wool Museum to provide additional interpretive planning consultation for the museum, February, 2009. This trip focused on developing a self-guiding audio tour and printed tour booklet for the local village.

Big Pit National Coal Museum, Wales, UK - 06th February 2009

Undertake critical interpretive assessment and asset audit of the Big Pit National Coal Mine Museum and make development recommendations at part of an ongoing contract with the National Museum of Wales

January 2009
Natural England, Chichester, West Sussex, UK - 20th January 2009

HDC awarded a contract to provide a 3-day Introduction to Interpretive Guiding module for Natural England. The course was presented at West Dean College in Chichester. Besides the hands-on-learning experiences, HDC developed a course workbook for the module.

Bio-Bio Alto Region, Conception, Chile - 12th January 2009

Undertook mystery shopper, audit & assessment of 10 communities within the Bio-Bio Alto region of Chile looking at tourism development potential within Mapuche Indian communities. Assessed eco lodges, self catering accommodation, camp sites, hotels, nature parks, museums, visitor centres, nature and driving trails and so on. Delivered a series of 6 systems planning workshops. Interviewed by 6 TV crews, 9 radio shows & 15 newspapers

ProXol & Nokia , Tampere, Finland - 05th January 2009

Commissioned to develop pilot mobile telephone interpretation project at UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Chile, Italy, the UK, Montenegro & Finland – this project will eventually roll out to 900 UNESCO sites around the world.

Delivered heritage interpretation presentation to CEO, senior management and international director team at the UNESCO head Office in Paris.

Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, PA, USA - 01st December 2008

Awarded the contract to develop the Interpretive Master Plan for the Susquehanna River Water Trail, a 500 mile long corridor that bisects most of eastern Pennsylvania, and includes cultural, natural and historic resources and stories located throughout the corridor. The project will also include: development of a wayfinding system, site analysis of existing orientation and safety panels, analysis of potential retrofit of existing panels, an outdoor recreation linkage system, and a model signage plan for the water trail Phase II. HDC will provide interpretive planning consultation services for the Trust for a project they are undertaking to restore the lighthouse at Sumburgh Head and convert some of the residential buildings associated with the lighthouse into an education and interpretive center.

Assessment and review of Walsingham village, the steam railway, coach parking facilities, the Walsingham Priory, Walsingham Anglican and Roman Catholic pilgrimage shrines, TIC, visitor centre and prison site as part of an destination development plan for the Walsingham Development Group. Walsingham has been Britain’s most important place of pilgrimage since medieval times, when travel to Rome and Compostella was virtually impossible. The original Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, founded in 1061, was destroyed at the Reformation.
