Site Evaluation, Chhatbir Zoo, Chandigarh, Punjab, India

Invited by Punjab Tourism to assess and evaluate heritage interpretation and visitor engagement at Chhatbir Zoo.

Also known as the Mahendra Chaudhry Zoological Park, Chhatbir Zoo is located 17 km from Chandigarh. The zoo which sprawls across a vast 202 acres attracts around 2,000 people per day raising to around 5,000 during holidays and festivals. The main attraction of the Chhatbir Zoo is the huge, white Royal Bengal Tigers.

The zoo suffers from a number of visitor behaviour problems and heritage interpretation and visit engagement is virtually non existent. We recommended that the zoo should undertake; visitor evaluation study, an interpretive master plan, a visitor engagement plan, and first and foremost supply a uniform for the the zoo team!
